Mr. Raymond L. Clark

November 29, 1925 - November 23, 2011

Raymond L. Clark

A quiet man of indomitable will, Ray Clark shared a lifetime lived with principle with his eight children and the many hundreds of fellow police officers he worked with during his 39-year career on the Chicago Police Department.

Raymond L. Clark, 85, passed away Wednesday of congestive heart failure, at his home, surrounded by family.

“Over the years, my siblings and I met many CPD officers who knew Dad.
They invariably spoke of him as a gentleman who was a great boss,” said his daughter, Peggy Clark. “And that's what made Dad the most proud - the fact that the women and men he worked with felt he’d always treated everyone fairly”

Mr. Clark began his career with the Chicago Police Department in 1948 and rose through the ranks. He held many positions thorough the years, including Chief of Detectives and Deputy Chief.
As a young police officer, he worked in the elite Robbery Unit with legendary detective Frank Pape, where he was known as “The Kid”. He retired in 1987.

He was followed in his career as a Chicago Police officer by three of his children, Sue Clark, Tim Clark and Tom Clark, all still currently serving.

Mr. Clark volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy at age 17, and was posted to the South Pacific for three years during World War II. He served as a sonar technician on the U.S.S. Hitchiti ATF-103.

After his discharge, he attended college but left without obtaining his degree. He so regretted that decision that, many years later, he returned to night school at Loyola University, graduating at the age of
51. “How he managed to juggle a family of eight children, full-time
work and part-time school for all those years, I can’t imagine,” his daughter Kathy Clark said. “But we were all so incredibly proud of him.”

Mr. Clark was married to the late Jean Marie Whelan Clark for 43 years.

He is also survived by his second wife, Giselle Plouffe, and his children Ginny Hickey, Patty Dolan and Nancy Riordan.

Loving father of Peggy (Bill McCorry) Clark, Kathy, Ginny (Joe) Hickey, Patty (Tom) Dolan, Tim, Nancy (Bob) Riordan, Tom (Jacqui), and Suzy Clark; Dear grandfather of Nancy and Tom Maloney, Mike Hickey, Pat and Kelly Dolan, Tracy, Erin, and Kyle Riordan, Ryan, Josephine, and Jeanmarie Clark.
